Historical Montserrat

Overview

The tour begins at 8:00, when your mountain guide picks you up from the meeting point located in Barcelona center. Drive into the mountainous countryside for an hour in an air-conditioned vehicle and admire the striking rocky scenery around you. Once at the ancient religious site of Montserrat, visit Santa Maria de Montserrat, the mountain’s Benedictine Monastery and the 12th-century carving La Moreneta (“The Black Madonna”).

Then, ride the glass-topped St. Joan funicular railway and enjoy spectacular views of the monastery and the mountain while going up. With your small group of 8 or less people hike for 2 hours at Montserrat Natural Park; your guide will select different routes, depending upon the group’s preference. See thousand-year-old shrines and hear stories about the important roles they had, during the Spanish Independence War. After hiking back down to the monastery you could taste some natural food products from local vendors, and purchase lunch before returning to Barcelona.
